What can coaching entail?
You are working on a CODE DANS project, a project at MaakPlaats or De Dansvitrine. Anyone who wants it can get coaching. But what does that actually entail?
What the coaching looks like depends from project to project. The final content is determined after a conversation with one of our staff members, Anne-Lore Baeckeland. Depending on the needs of the creator, it is decided together who could be the best coach. If you have someone in mind yourself, you can certainly suggest it. If not, we will suggest three coaches. Then you will engage in a conversation with the suggested coaches to see who can help you further.
In general, coaching consists of an introductory meeting and three three-hour work sessions.
Here are some topics that may be covered:
- Start-up: you have ideas, but you need some help making them concrete.
- Dramaturgy: you have individual dance pieces worked out, but you need guidance on sequencing and working out transitions.
- Lighting and technique: you have technical questions about music, lighting or maybe even projections.
- Dance technical: your work is almost finished, but you need some external input to take it to the next level. Your dancers could use some more tips, to make the performance optimal.
- Choreographic: you have dance material and are looking for ways to develop it further.
- Location: you have a project at a specific location and want advice on how to adapt it there.
- Costume and scenography: you are looking for how costumes and scenery can add value to your piece.
Past examples
- A group of semi-professional hip-hoppers create a piece set to classical music. The different dancers interpret the music differently and ask a coach to help them interpret the music in a unified way and discover the other possibilities (coach: David Hernandez).
- A community work organization wants to create a community project with film and dance; they have no idea what their idea requires to be worked out. Jonas Baeckeland helped them conceptualize a realistically workable project, gave tips and helped with the elaboration.
- A young professional dancer is creating a performance with film projections and is technically figuring out the best ways to work out his idea. Saskia Louwaard gave him tips and helped him find the best way to develop his idea.
- A student at the KASK wants to create a living room performance that incorporates very personal stories. She wants to work with someone who has never danced before. To develop her ideas, she received coaching from Bérengère Bodin.
- A folk dance group has created a performance with several dances and is looking for a way to make the different pieces into one. (Coach: Helmut Van Den Meersschaut)
- A duo wants to make a full-length performance and is having a hard time making choices from their ideas. They received coaching from Eddy Becquard.
- A group of young people created their own performance and requested coaching to rework their piece to create a proper tension arc (Coach: Tijen Lawton).
